Samantha Martin of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP Selected as One of ABI's 2021 "40 Under 40"

Alexandria, Va. ABI announces that Samantha Martin of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP (New York) has been selected as one of ABI’s “40 Under 40,” ABI’s annual program that recognizes 40 of the top insolvency industry professionals under the age of 40. The honorees will be recognized at a special ceremony to be held on Dec. 10 at ABI’s 2021 Winter Leadership Conference at Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.

Martin is special counsel in the Financial Restructuring Group in Stroock’s New York office. She has significant experience representing debtors, official committees of unsecured creditors, ad hoc groups of bondholders and lenders, individual creditors, purchasers and liquidating trustees in all aspects of complex corporate restructurings, including chapter 11 cases and out-of-court restructurings. Martin also has advised foreign representatives in chapter 15 recognition proceedings. She currently serves as board advisor for the New York Chapter of the International Women’s Insolvency & Restructuring Confederation (IWIRC NY), as communications manager for the American Bankruptcy Institute’s Unsecured Trade Creditors Committee and as co-chair of the Stroock Women's Affinity Group. Martin also recently co-chaired IWIRC NY’s board, and she is a member of the Executive Committee for the International Insolvency Institute’s NextGen Program and a member of the Red Party Committee for Her Justice. In addition, she is active in pro bono efforts, many of which involve protecting the educational rights of students with disabilities. She has helped children on the autism spectrum secure appropriate school placements and drafted pivotal briefs in a highly publicized case involving the displacement of a public school for students with autism in favor of a charter school, which resulted in a new law establishing parents’ rights to participate in the public process. Martin received her J.D. in 2007 from Yeshiva University Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, where she received the Jacob Burns Medal and served as managing editor of the Cardozo Law Review from 2006-2007, and she received her B.A. in 2004 from the University of Florida.

“The 2021 honorees are a testament to the future of the insolvency profession, with exemplary accomplishments in both their careers and communities,” said ABI Executive Director Amy Quackenboss. “We look forward to this diverse collection of young leaders propelling ABI's full range of activities forward to advance the profession.”

The “40 Under 40” winners are distinguished by professional achievements and service and were selected by a group of experienced professionals from ABI’s current leadership. Nominations were submitted earlier this year by the candidates themselves or by colleagues via the initiative’s website, http://abi40under40.org. More than 200 candidates, each with outstanding records of professional achievement and community leadership, were evaluated by 20 judges. The majority of the applicants were partners, directors or managing directors at their firms.
