Joseph Esmont of BakerHostetler Selected as One of ABI's 2023 "40 Under 40"

Alexandria, Va. ABI announces that Joseph Esmont of BakerHostetler (Cleveland) has been selected as one of ABI’s “40 Under 40,” ABI’s award program that recognizes 40 of the top insolvency industry professionals under the age of 40. The honorees will be recognized at a special ceremony on Dec. 1 at ABI’s 2023 Winter Leadership Conference at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Esmont is a partner with BakerHostetler, which he joined straight out of law school in 2008, two weeks before Lehman Brothers collapsed. His practice includes both plaintiff- and defense-side litigation, restructuring and transactional work. He is particularly experienced in the energy and utilities industries, in cases of mass torts and fraud, and in the impact of bankruptcy on environmental obligations. Esmont is listed in Lawdragon 500 Leading U.S. Bankruptcy and Restructuring Lawyers for 2023, and he chaired the Turnaround Management Association’s Global Nextgen Committee in 2020, on which he served for five years. He also served on TMA Global’s special Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee in 2020 and has served on the Global Awards Committee since 2021. For seven years, he volunteered for TMA Northern Ohio’s/Cleveland Bar Association’s 3Rs program, which provides career-planning and legal rights education to Cleveland-area high school students. He is a contributor to Lexis Practical Guidance (2022) and the Collier Bankruptcy Practice Guide (2018-present), and he serves as an editorial board member of Commercial Bankruptcy Litigation.

“The members of the 2023 class are an inspiration for the commitment, creativity and ingenuity that they demonstrate in both their careers and communities,” said ABI Executive Director Amy Quackenboss. “This diverse collection of honorees is comprised of future leaders that will drive ABI and the insolvency community forward.”

The “40 Under 40” winners are distinguished by professional achievements and service and were selected by a group of experienced professionals from ABI’s current leadership. Now in its seventh year, the goal of ABI’s “40 under 40” award program is not simply to create a one-time ceremony, but to fully engage those selected as future leaders in the insolvency profession and to build on the initiative each year.
