Alexandria, Va.— ABI announces that Gabriel Olivera of O'Melveny & Myers LLP (New York) has been selected as one of ABI’s “40 Under 40,” ABI’s award program that recognizes 40 of the top insolvency industry professionals under the age of 40. The honorees will be recognized at a special ceremony on Dec. 1 at ABI’s 2023 Winter Leadership Conference at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Olivera is a counsel at O’Melveny & Myers LLP and focuses on advising clients on financial reorganizations. He combines his restructuring experience with his Spanish-speaking ability to help bridge language and cultural barriers with Latin American clients involved in complex financial restructurings. Olivera has extensive experience in corporate and municipal bankruptcy-related matters, and has represented debtors, creditors’ committees, bondholders, directors and officers, and other parties-in-interest in some of the most well-known bankruptcy matters. He is currently part of the O’Melveny team helping the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority restructure its over $10 billion in obligations. Prior to entering private practice, Olivera was a judicial law clerk at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Puerto Rico.
A native of Puerto Rico, Olivera does everything he can to mentor and encourage the inclusion of minority, and especially Hispanic, attorneys in Big Law. At his firm, he serves as the New York office’s representative for the firmwide Organization of Latinx Employees, and he is a liaison between partners and associates/counsel in the New York office’s Associate and Counsel Advisory Committee. Outside of the office, Olivera has mentored high school students in the New Jersey Law & Education Empowerment Project, which empowers urban youth to perform at high academic levels.
“The members of the 2023 class are an inspiration for the commitment, creativity and ingenuity that they demonstrate in both their careers and communities,” said ABI Executive Director Amy Quackenboss. “This diverse collection of honorees is comprised of future leaders that will drive ABI and the insolvency community forward.”
The “40 Under 40” winners are distinguished by professional achievements and service and were selected by a group of experienced professionals from ABI’s current leadership. Now in its seventh year, the goal of ABI’s “40 under 40” award program is not simply to create a one-time ceremony, but to fully engage those selected as future leaders in the insolvency profession and to build on the initiative each year.
