Dr. Aurelio Gurrea-Martinez of Singapore Management University Selected as One of ABI's 2021 "40 Under 40"

Alexandria, Va. ABI announces that Dr. Aurelio Gurrea-Martinez of Singapore Management University (Singapore) has been selected as one of ABI’s “40 Under 40,” ABI’s annual program that recognizes 40 of the top insolvency industry professionals under the age of 40. The honorees will be recognized at a special ceremony to be held on Dec. 10 at ABI’s 2021 Winter Leadership Conference at Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.

Dr. Gurrea-Martinez is an Assistant Professor of Law at Singapore Management University, where he teaches company law, financial and securities regulation, corporate governance, and comparative and international insolvency law. He is also the founder and head of the Singapore Global Restructuring Initiative and co-chair of the SMU-3CL Cambridge Roundtable on Corporate Insolvency Law. Before joining SMU, he was a Fellow of the Program on Corporate Governance and a Fellow of the Program on International Financial Systems at Harvard Law School. Dr. Gurrea-Martinez has taught, studied or conducted research at several institutions in the U.S., the U.K., Continental Europe, Asia and Latin America, including the University of Oxford, Harvard Law School, Columbia Law School, Yale Law School and Stanford University. He also was a partner in the Corporate, Finance & Restructuring Department of Dictum Abogados from September 2010-July 2018 and an auditor at Audifaith Europe from July 2008-September 2010.

Dr. Gurrea-Martinez is also a member of the Steering Committee of INSOL International’s Academic Group, head of the Research Group on Fintech at the SMU Centre for AI and Data Governance, member of the International Insolvency Institute NextGen Group, director at the Ibero-American Institute for Law and Finance, member of the American Law and Economics Association, academic member of the European Corporate Governance Institute, member of the Spanish Bar Association and a member of the Spanish Registry of Qualified Auditors. He received his J.S.M. from Stanford University, M.Sc. in law and finance from the University of Oxford, Ph.D. in law from CEU San Pablo University, and Bachelor of laws and Bachelor of business administration from the University of Granada.

The “40 Under 40” winners are distinguished by professional achievements and service and were selected by a group of experienced professionals from ABI’s current leadership. Nominations were submitted earlier this year by the candidates themselves or by colleagues via the initiative’s website, http://abi40under40.org. More than 200 candidates, each with outstanding records of professional achievement and community leadership, were evaluated by 20 judges. The majority of the applicants were partners, directors or managing directors at their firms.
